As northern China enters the early days of winter, in the cauliflower achievement transformation base in Xiqing District, Tianjin, China’s national chief scientist in cauliflower breeding, research fellow at the Institute of Vegetables, Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Sun Deling, squats shoulder-to-shoulder in the field with Muhammad Yousaf Imran, a farmer from Punjab, Pakistan, inspecting the newly bred cauliflower varieties. This meeting spanning 4,000 kilometers dates back ten years.

In 2015, Sun Deling noticed that cauliflowers were popular among people in the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries. Hoping to take China’s high-quality cauliflower varieties abroad, he looked for opportunities at the Asian Seed Congress. It was there that he met Imran for the first time. Sun gave the Pakistani farmer some Chinese cauliflower seeds free of charge for trial cultivation. They made an agreement: if the trial exceeded expectations and yielded well, they would meet again at the conference next year and continue their cooperation. They never knew that the agreement could last for ten years until now.

Over the past ten years, Sun and his team have conducted in-depth investigations in Pakistan for multiple times, successfully found the pain points of local cauliflower industry: low yield, inconsistent seed quality, poor adaptation to the unstable local climate, limited channels of seed procurement and high prices, which erode farmers’ income. To address this predicament, the team rooted themselves locally, collected thousands of sets of climate and soil data, and carried out breeding experiments based on Pakistan’s temperature and precipitation patterns as well as pest and disease characteristics. After trialing more than 10,000 varieties, they have finally find the right ones suitable for the local conditions. The new varieties not only resolved market bottlenecks and raised farmers’ incomes, but also forged a truly localized model of seed cooperation. “Every breeder in our team wishes that people in Belt and Road Initiative partner countries can enjoy fresh cauliflowers all year round, just like us in China,” Sun said.

During the past ten years, Pakistan's purchasing of Tianjin cauliflower seeds has soared, from scattered orders in the pilot phase to a steady 20% annual growth in procurement volume, and from a single type to multiple specialized varieties characterized in heat-tolerance, cold-resistance, early-maturation and so on. Tianjin cauliflower seeds are now the first choice on local farmers’ shopping lists across all major cropping zones of Pakistan.

What makes Chinese seeds gain recognition overseas? Sun and Imran provided the same answer: high quality and competitive price. Local dealers love to sell Chinese seeds, farmers love to grow Chinese cauliflowers, and consumers love to eat Chinese cauliflowers. Chinese seeds have created a virtuous industrial cycle on a foreign land.

Today, Pakistan’s cauliflower planting landscape has been fundamentally reshaped by "Chinese seeds". In the past, farmers worked hard all year round but earned very little, and many even thought of giving up. After adopting the new Chinese varieties, yields rose sharply and storability improved, allowing them to be trucked to distant cities. Higher incomes have brought abandoned lands back into cultivation and the number of growers is getting bigger and bigger. Cauliflowers helped farmers expand their businesses, and now affordable, high-quality cauliflowers are available all year round in local markets, enriching the food choices on dining tables in ordinary families.

“Local people here really love cauliflowers grown from Chinese seeds; they are often all pre-ordered before they are even picked from the fields!” Imran said. “These seeds have taken roots in our country. They are more than crops in the field; they are our hope for a better life in the future. They freed our farmers from worrying about harvests and from dependence on over-priced seed. Good harvests and higher incomes have brought visible changes to our lives.”

Speaking of the future, Sun is calm and confident: “Seeds are tiny, but on them rely the hope of every country's food production and the fundamental guarantee of a better life. As Chinese agricultural science grows more self-reliant and stronger, more and more Chinese seeds will go abroad and shine in foreign fields.” From Tianjin to Punjab, from laboratories to farmlands, a tiny seed has closely linked two strangers and enabled China-Pakistan agricultural cooperation to bear more fruits.(津云新闻记者/张璟 孙畅 设计制作/王舒瑶 费腾 Jinyun news reporters/ Zhang Jing, Sun Chang; Design and production/Wang Shuyao, Fei Teng)
